Preparing to work alongside COVID-19 for prolonged period
After several months of handing COVID-19 in Maersk Drilling, the COVID-19 Task Force convened during July for an After Action Review (AAR) to assess what has been learned, what went well and where new measures can keep the company even safer. This exercise resulted in valuable reflections and new measures to support the organisation in working alongside the pandemic in the coming months and beyond.
“Just as we have it embedded in our safety culture, we need to maintain the capacity to deal with a crisis for a prolonged period. This means that we must be proactive and continuously review what we have learned so we can keep taking the right precautions and implement the most effective measures that mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on our global operations,” says Erik Roesen Larsen, Head of HSSE, Maersk Drilling.
Learnings and new measures implemented
Some of the most critical learnings have been centered around offshore operations. It is a top priority to uphold the very strict process for personnel coming onboard rigs. All crew, customers, third party partners and maintenance personnel must complete a COVID-19 test, a pre-departure travel questionnaire and, when required by the client or local authority, take part in a two-week quarantine. All non-essential personnel continue to be prohibited from visiting rigs globally.
In order to further ensure a healthy working environment onboard, Maersk Drilling rigs now have rapid COVID-19 test kits onboard all rigs, so that crew have the ability to test anyone that displays symptoms and can take swift action when necessary. This is especially important for rigs in remote locations where access to testing is not always readily available.
In addition, mitigating travel restrictions and quarantine measures has become key to safeguarding everyday operations. A framework for back-up crew pools has become standard practice for operations. This includes sourcing of more local crew within a given country or region in order to make crew changes more reliable by limiting travel. The company now also has the capability to contract chartered flights and boats on short notice. In some regions, the ability to privately transport crew has emerged as a key factor in effective crew changes.
