Offshore Installation Manager (OIM)
The OIM is the overall person responsible for the rig and its personnel. His/her position is equivalent to the Captain position onboard a ship and he/she must take an extensive series of safety, environmental and leadership courses to build up the necessary theoretical knowledge to lead a crew of up to 180 members. The OIM is also has overall responsibility for all safety of personnel onboard, and he/she ensures that all operations onboard are performed in line with all rules and regulations. He/she also ensures that the client’s representative is kept informed about all activities and operations onboard the rig.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW TO HOLD THE POSITION?
- Certificate of competency – STCW 95 II/2 unlimited (Master)
- DP Operator’s certificate (only for DP Semi-submersibles and drillships)
- IMCA DP Logbook
- Minimum five years’ offshore experience
- Experience as Security/Safety Officer preferred.
HOW DO I GET THERE?
You start in the maritime industry to obtain the necessary marine certificates. You can then change to the offshore industry – typically the Marine section – and build up offshore experience before moving up the hierarchy.
