Engine Room Responsible (1st and 2nd Engineer)
The Engine Room Responsible is responsible for conducting the engine watch and informing the Technical Section Leader immediately about abnormal instrument readings or failure symptoms detected on critical equipment. The Engine Room Responsible is also responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the machinery.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW TO HOLD THE POSITION?
In order to hold this position, you must have the following:
- Certificate of competency – STCW 95 III/2 (Chief Engineer)
- Mechanical background with knowledge of diesel engines
- Automation mechanical course
HOW DO I GET THERE?
You can both start your career as Motorman and progress from there, or you can come from a maritime background as certified Chief Engineer. A Chief Engineer certificate will allow you to progress to Maintenance Engineer where a full STCW is required.
