Motorman and Engine Room Responsible

Engine Room Responsible (1st and 2nd Engineer)

WHAT DOES THE WORK CONSIST OF?

The Engine Room Responsible is responsible for conducting the engine watch and informing the Technical Section Leader immediately about abnormal instrument readings or failure symptoms detected on critical equipment. The Engine Room Responsible is also responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the machinery.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW TO HOLD THE POSITION?

In order to hold this position, you must have the following:
- Certificate of competency – STCW 95 III/2 (Chief Engineer)
- Mechanical background with knowledge of diesel engines
- Automation mechanical course

HOW DO I GET THERE?

You can both start your career as Motorman and progress from there, or you can come from a maritime background as certified Chief Engineer. A Chief Engineer certificate will allow you to progress to Maintenance Engineer where a full STCW is required.

Motorman (3rd and 4th Engineer)

WHAT DOES THE WORK CONSIST OF?

The Motorman executes routine checks of the machinery, tanks, bilge and pump-rooms along with the daily operation and maintenance of the machinery.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW TO HOLD THE POSITION?

In order to hold this position, you must have a mechanical background with knowledge about diesel engines.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

You are either a former Ship’s Technician or have a mechanical background with experience in working with diesel engines. You can also start as Oiler or corresponding position on an offshore unit and progress from there. Offshore experience is not a prerequisite.
